New to TVNZ+: May 11-17

TVNZ+ rounds up every season of Deadwood from May 16 when the most-wanted western series it should be streaming is Lawman: Bass Reeves.

Deadwood is a classic that stands up to repeated viewing but why do we continue to miss out on Bass Reeves in NZ when it’s from the same stable as Yellowstone, 1883 and 2023?

Sky belatedly picked up Yellowstone after its Blu-ray release, which an indie label took a punt on, while Prime Video NZ snapped up  Paramount+ properties 1883 and 2023.

There’s no sign of it doing likewise for Bass Reeves.

Likewise, Billy the Kid, a western series that’s notched up two seasons on MGM+, a US cable channel that’s owned by Amazon MGM Studios.

Even so, in this market, you would expect Bass Reeves to stream on TVNZ+, which licenses most P+ branded series.

Presumably it’s acquired Deadwood via Paramount Global. Although an HBO staple, Paramount released it here on disc (which was shockingly inferior to HBO’s US box sets).

Liam Lawson: In the Wings (May 17) is a Red Bull TV documentary that Stuff dubbed “a deep dive into the other side of the emotional roller-coaster that is a young driver’s journey to Formula 1″.

UFO (May 17) examines the history of the phenomenon through eyewitness testimony, and cultural and political touchpoints.

The Showtime series was well reviewed, although appears to have flown below the radar of top critics.

As posted here, TVNZ+ will stream S2 of Interview With the Vampire a day later than AMC+ (May 13).

Also returning are One Of Us is Lying S2 (May 11) and FBI: International S3 (May 13) while unspooling from May 15 are the movies:

  • Looper
  • Midsommar
  • Stronger
  • Gifted
  • Training Day.

Hi, I was really enjoying ‘Til Death on TVNZ+. Any insight into if it’s coming back or moving platforms?

  2. TVNZ’s rights will have expired. The series ran from 2006-2010. It’s been around the block a few times, having aired on Prime before TVNZ. Don’t expect it to resurface any time soon on any other platform but it will probably roll around again within the next couple of years. Streaming services and network schedules are big beasts to feed, and library content provides cheap fodder.
