New to TVNZ+: May 25-31

Sexy Beast (May 31) is a Paramount+ gangs-of-London series set in the ’90s underworld starring James McArdle, Emun Elliott, Sarah Greene and Tamsin Greig.

A prequel to the riveting Ben Kingsley movie (2000) of the same name, it chronicles the friendship between two thieves.

“There are nods to the visual style of the original, echoes of some of its lines, and hints of what is to come, most of which feel logical and relatively unforced,” The Age said.

The Australian liked “its richly portrayed gargoyles of the English criminal classes” but acknowledged it “isn’t a patch on the film”.

British critics were less impressed: “Scenes capitulate to cartoonishly sleazy brutality” (The Times) and “a deeply unsexy beast” (The Telegraph).

Also new are The Aotearoa Music Awards (May 31), S2 of So Help Me Todd (May 31) and the documentaries:

Belushi (May 25), an “affectionate” 2020 profile of the comedian

Zuckerberg: King of the Metaverse (May 28): “One of those effective films that says nothing new, but pulls together the available information in a coherent manner” (The Telegraph)

James Blunt: One Brit Wonder (May 30): “The witty singer’s superb comeback is a delight to behold in this entertaining fly-on-the-wall documentary” (The Guardian).
