New to TVNZ+: May 4-10

New comedy-mystery Population 11 (May 9) stars Superstore’s Ben Feldmanan as an Ohio bank teller who visits his father in the tiny Australian town of Bidgeegud – only to find that he has vanished.

“This new Stan comedy is a letdown, delaying reveals for mysteries and ambiguities that weren’t particularly interesting to begin with,” The Guardian said.

But The Conversation thought it “a charming watch – if a tad heavy on the Aussie cliches” while ScreenHub argued: “Rather than pulling against each other, the comedy and the mystery push the show forward …

“It helps that the show is beautifully paced and very bingeable. Each episode is only half an hour long and always ends on a key revelation; the next episode picks straight up afterwards.”

Intergalactic (May 10) first streamed on Neon and Sky Go three years ago.  New Scientist thought it “a promising prison-break drama set in 2143 … messy and charming by turn” while the Independent dubbed it “Prisoner launched into hyperspace”.

Also new are:

  • Stable: The Boxing Game (May 10), a four-part documentary series about the notorious McGuigans’ boxing stable
  • Spies of Terror (May 5), a French language dramatisation of the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris and how France’s anti-terrorist services DGSE and DGSI hunted down those responsible
  • the third and final season of NCIS: Hawai’i (May 7)
  • Love Island Italy (May 6).
