New to TVNZ OnDemand in October

Next month TVNZ OnDemand will fast-track a new David Tennant true-crime drama and the latest season of The Bachelorette.

Des (October 8) is three-part series about serial killer Denis Nilsen, a civil servant who murdered 15 boys and men on the streets of Soho from 1978-83.

While he confessed after his arrest, he couldn’t remember his victims’ names. With no apparent motive, inconclusive forensic evidence and most of Nilsen’s victims living off-grid, the police started the biggest manhunt investigation in UK history — not for the murderer, but for the murdered.

The series, which went to last week in the UK, was widely acclaimed.

“This sensitive, finely worked drama shows us the unrelentingly bleak reality of the monstrous narcissist Dennis Nilsen’s macabre murders,” The Guardian said.

Radio Times praised Des for “shunning true-crime tropes” and “one of the best performances” in Tenant’s career but added this caveat: “By making Nilsen such an interesting character, viewers want to spend more time with one of Britain’s most notorious murderers …

“In other words, Des will leave you wanting to know more about Dennis Nilsen, not his victims or why so many of them weren’t reported missing.”

S16 of The Bachelorette revolves around the oldest Bachelorette ever cast, 39-year-old hair stylish Clare Crawely (who was runner-up on S18 of The Bachelor), and will stream weekly from October 14.

Also new to TVNZ OnDemand next month will be: God Shave the Queens (full season, October 24), which goes behind the curtains of a Drag Race tour in the UK; A Tale of Two Coreys, a Lifetime movie about ’80s teenage stars Corey Haim and Corey Feldman whose adult lives spiralled out of control (October 1); and Old Dog, a Pulse documentary about a veteran Kiwi dog whisperer (October 1).

Other premieres will include season two of HEIHEI kids’ show Welcome to Cardboard City (October 5, complete with the voices of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, journalist Mihingarangi Forbes and Radio Hauraki host Matt Heath), From the Vault: Vintage TV & Garden Shows (October 1), ASB: Backing Business (October 5) and For Life (to be confirmed) while debuting October 1 on the branded channels will be:
