New TVNZ Channel to Duke It Out Online and On Air

Family Guy, Gotham and Brooklyn Nine Nine are bound for TVNZ’s new go-to channel for guys, Duke, but the bad news is they won’t be in HD.

This morning the broadcaster announced Duke would go live on March 20 — online, on Freeview and on Sky.

The slickly cut trailer mixes clips from Family Guy, Gotham and B99, which are deemed too narrow for primetime on TV2, with highlights from second-tier newcomers Agent X, American Fringe, Beowulf and Angie Tribeca.

Also expect as part of the mix plenty of sport — AFL, gridiron, basketball, extreme — and movies starring the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Matthew McConaughey, Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone and Russell Crowe.

The trailer’s in HD but the channel will air in SD on Freeview and Sky.

“HD isn’t on the cards for launch but it’s something we’ll keep in mind for the channel’s future development,” TVNZ communications manager Georgie Hills says.

“As for online … not all the content will be delivered in HD so we can’t say the live stream will be true HD.

“However, the quality will be as good as if, if not better than traditional broadcast. It’s optimised viewing but we can’t claim HD status for this.”

Disappointing that Gotham will be in SD. The first season looked stunning in HD.

  2. Hopefully season 2 of Gotham will soon be on Netflix 🙂

  3. What is wrong with TV execs. Go HD or go home!

  4. Agree with Paul above. There’s no excuse for SD.

  5. Have to agree with HD comments – it’s enough to not make me bother – love to know the cost differences (just to get an understanding). I’ve even started watching Prime now!

  6. Just saw a post on Geekzone saying that Duke was going HD Mid January

  7. Not sure about mid-January but will be in a “matter of weeks“, TVNZ says.

  8. Thanx Philip. Good news for the Superbowl hopefully.
