Nothing Trivial About HD Drama’s Funding – or Ratings

NZ On Air is bankrolling the next HD season of Nothing Trivial for $6.6 million dollars.

That will pay for 13 more episodes of the South Pacific Pictures series.

NZOA invested $6.9 million in the first season of Nothing Trivial, which will be released on DVD (but not Blu-ray) on October 26.

It ended last night on a two-month high, with a 25-54 rating of 10.2%.

Over the 13 weeks, it averaged 9.8% of 25-54 year-olds, the audience TV One targets, and 10.4% of household shoppers with kids — an impressive feat given the sitcom juggernauts it faced on TV2.

While the opening night 25-54 rating of 13.3% was unmatched, three other episodes topped 11%, four rated 9%-10.2% and none of the rest dipped below 8.5%; all but four episodes rated above 10% of HHS/kids.

Its enduring popularity and industry politics helped to thwart TV3’s local HD drama, Underbelly NZ: Land of the Long Green Cloud, and despite Kiwi leads in Underbelly: Razor, the latest instalment in the Aussie crime franchise has drawn only about half of Nothing Trivial’s 25-54 viewership.

In a press release announcing Nothing Trivial’s renewal, TVNZ commissioning chief Andrew Shaw praised “the talented team” at South Pacific Pictures for bringing “endearing home-grown characters to life”.

The show’s second season will continue  the Shortland Street producer’s primetime drama dominance next year with HD commissions on each of the major networks: Nothing Trivial (TV One), Go Girls (TV2) and The Almighty Johnsons(TV3).
