TVNZ OnDemand to Belatedly Debut Hacks

TVNZ OnDemand has picked up the acclaimed Jean Smart comedy, Hacks.

It has yet to disclose when the first season will stream, other than to say it’s “coming soon”, but expect it to be bundled with S2, which rolls out weekly from May 12 in the US.

Hacks stars Smart (Mare of Easttown) as a legendary Las Vegas comedian who, in a desperate bid to remain relevant, is forced to mentor an ambitious, entitled young writer (Hannah Einbinder).

Despite streaming on HBO Max in the US, TVNZ has secured the 10-part series through its NBCUniversal deal.

In the UK, where HBO Max also has yet to launch, Hacks has just premiered on Prime Video.

S1 won Emmy Awards for outstanding lead actress (Smart), writing and direction, and averaged a 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 68 reviews.

The consensus? “A prickling debut that pulls few punches, Hacks deftly balances its sharp critiques of the comedy world with more intimate moments, all the while giving the incomparable Jean Smart a role worthy of her talents — and an excellent partner in Hannah Einbinder.”

On Metacritic, it earned “must watch” status with an 82% approval rating.
