Oscar Winners Due Soon(ish) on Blu

Oscar-winning frontier drama The Revenant looks set to be released here on Blu-ray two months later than in the US.

That’s despite the Leonardo DiCaprio hit opening here theatrically in both territories at the same time.

Universal Pictures NZ, which distributes 20th Century Fox titles in this market, has yet to confirm an official NZ release date for The Revenant, which won Oscars for best actor, direction and cinematography.

But it’s slated to go on sale in the US on March 22 whereas Australian retailers have listed it for May 18, which is likely to be the NZ date* as well given the transTasman markets typically are treated as one.

The year’s other Oscar-winning western, The Hateful Eight, which earned Ennio Morricone an original score trophy, will be released here on May 25 while due early June are best picture winner Spotlight, best foreign language film Son of Saul and Room, which won Brie Larson the best actress award.

Expected in late May are The Danish Girl and The Big Short, with Brooklyn following soon after, while out next week is Spectre, which won for best original song.

Is the The Hateful Eight the 167 min digital version or the 187min 70mm roadshow version?

  2. It’s the shorter version but with the 2.76:1 ultra-wide aspect ratio. Here’s the official US press release and an informed commentary.

  3. Thanx for the links. I’ll give it a miss until the Roadshow version comes out. Looks like a lot of other people feel the same way looking at the above link.
