Oscars to Stream Live on Disney+

First it was sport, now it’s awards shows that streamers are increasingly usurping from pay and free-to-air broadcasters around the world.

Netflix is streaming the Screen Actor Guild Awards live and now Disney+ has nabbed the rights to the biggest showbiz trophy, the Academy Awards.

At least in NZ — in Australia, they will air on Channel 7 and stream on 7Plus.

Here’s the media release:

Auckland, New Zealand (Feb. 22, 2024) – Disney+ announced today that the 96th Oscars will be live-streamed in New Zealand on Monday, March 11 at 11:30am NZDT.

Emmy Award-winning late-night talk show host and producer Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the live show for the fourth time.

The full list of nominees for the 96th Oscars can be found here: https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2024.

Raj Kapoor will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Molly McNearney and Katy Mullan serving as executive producers. Hamish Hamilton is set to direct the telecast.

Let’s be honest, the Oscars and Disney seem to be a good pairing with the dross they both put out nowadays … I guess they’ll claim good viewership due to 7-day streaming now.
