Prime Universe to Expand With New Star Trek

Prime will acquire the Star Trek revival due to launch next year through its output pact with CBS Studios International.

The reboot, which was touted today to advertisers in the US, will be made by CBS Television Studios but screen exclusively on CBS’s digital streaming platform, CBS All Access, following the premiere’s free-to-air showcasing on the parent network,

It’s possible that Prime’s sister Sky channel The Zone will score the series first, as happened with Zoo. But given the power of the Trekkie branding, it would have more value in the FTA market as a high-profile Prime property.

Prime’s also likely to land the spin-off for The Good Wife, which will star Christine Baranski and Cush Jumbo, who joined the series in the final season that’s winding up on TV3.

Often, a network that’s been screening the parent show will get first dibs on a spin-off but given TV3 consigned The Good Wife to late-night long ago, it won’t be interested in licensing the series from a distributor with which it doesn’t have a volume deal.

Prime’s decision to do the CBSSI deal four years ago looks set to pay dividends next year, with up to 11 new series likely to debut.

    YAY, it’s good to see the new Star Trek will screen in New Zealand, not that I didn’t think it wouldn’t 🙂 I hope we get to see the new Twin Peaks as well 🙂

    Slightly off topic sorry, does anyone know if Preacher will be shown here fast tracked? I would hate to have find it other ways.

    Afraid you’ll have to seek it out online. It starts this weekend in the US, where it’s been well reviewed, but isn’t scheduled for any of the likely networks here this month or next. It’s distributed by AMC, so would seem a natural for Sky’s SoHo or The Zone.

    Thanks Philip, depressingly it appears MediaWorks has the Sony Pictures output deal. I guess they got first right of refusal.

    Preacher is a Sony Pictures distribution so its equally as likely to appear on Lightbox as Sky. For example Amazon has picked it up for the UK, Japan and Germany. FYI Sony also distribute Better Call Saul, Mozart in the Jungle, Mad Dogs, Blunt Talk, Helix, Lizzy Borden and Masters of Sex. So its 50/50 who bids it and gets it down under.

    Thanks, Mike, for catching the AMC goof. I’d still pick Preacher for Sky, given its relationship with Sony and that if Lightbox had scored it, it would be being fast-tracked here like its other Sony product.

    Lightbox has just announced it has Preacher available to stream. Why it took so long to do so is bizarre when it should be flag waving these acquisitions weeks ahead of their premiere.
