Ruby Road New Doctor Who Gem?

Disney+ has released a teaser trailer for the December 26 Doctor Who special, The Church on Ruby Road, which introduces Ncuti Gatwa as The Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson as his new companion, Ruby Sunday.

The Telegraph has already reviewed the special, awarding it four out of five stars.

“The new Doctor’s Christmas episode swaps traditional sci-fi for musical numbers and fantasy sequences – but it’s still delightful …

Ncuti Gatwa has huge charisma. He brings a swashbuckling style and glowing confidence to the Fifteenth Doctor, plus a dazzling smile: no Time Lord has ever had such great teeth …

“This is a Christmas adventure for all the family. There is no real jeopardy, and there’s even room for a musical number in the middle (Gatwa can also sing and dance). And it is a fantasy adventure, rather than sci-fi …

“You could be watching any Hollywood action film, which might upset the Doctor Who geeks but offers easy entry into the ‘Whoniverse’ for a new generation of fans.”

“Enjoyable as it’s been to mark 60 years of Doctor Who with a trilogy of specials that celebrated a purple patch in the show’s history, it’s with the show’s 2023 Christmas special that returning showrunner Russell T Davies has his first real opportunity to showcase his vision for its future,” Radio Times said.

“Sharply directed by Mark Tonderai (who also helmed Rosa, one of the best regarded episodes of the show’s previous era), The Church on Ruby Road is a colourful, escapist, often laugh-out-loud funny caper that not only functions as near-perfect Christmas Day entertainment but also sets the template for a new Doctor Who – like a freshly-regenerated Doctor, it’s different but still somehow the same, with enough familiar DNA and fan-pleasing references to keep the faithful happy.”
