Schedule Alert: Towies to Overtake Race

TVNZ 1 has postponed the June 17 premiere of Critical Condition so it can shift Race Across the World to 8.30 Wednesdays.

Race has been airing 7.30 Wednesday but after next week’s broadcast, Towies and The Force will replace it as the Seven Sharp lead-out.

Programmers will be hoping the Australian reality shows can compete better against Three’s top-rating Bondi Rescue, which is soon to screen a celebrity challenge featuring Richie McCaw.

Ironically, Towies used to air on Three (season one also can be streamed on Netflix); The Force will be a re-run.

Race, meanwhile, will succeed The British Tribe Next Door, which opened poorly but this week averaged 4.7% of TVNZ 1’s 25-54 demographic to narrowly beat TVNZ 2’s Have You Been Paying Attention?.

Although it lost to Three’s 9-1-1, TVNZ 1 sees the emergency services drama as softer competition for Race.

In other scheduling news, Fair Go emerges from its COVID-19 lockdown on Monday (TVNZ 1, 7.30), when it will celebrate businesses who went above and beyond during the crisis, demand better service from Air NZ and offer financial advice for tough times.

Similarly, this weekend’s Sunday (TVNZ 1, 7.30) will highlight NZ’s search for a COVID-19 vaccine, visit Kaikōura in the aftermath of a pandemic, and interview surfing champion Tyler Wright.

Tuesday’s 20/20 (TVNZ 1, 9.30) will report on Lou Pearlman, former Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC manager who ran one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in history.

And appearing on Wednesday’s Have You Been Paying Attention? will be Joseph Moore, Ben Hurley and Madeleine Sami.

Finally, this weekend Prime will screen an extra episode of The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice (4.00 Saturday); it replaces American Restoration and Hot Bench.
