Schedule Watch: June 16
The powerful new Netflix docudrama, When They See Us, has reignited interest in the case of the “Central Park Five” who were accused of viciously beating and raping jogger Trisha Meili 30 years ago. Tuesday’s 20/20 (TVNZ 1, 9.30) provides what it promises will be “a close look at the shocking case, which triggered a media frenzy and left five young men wrongly imprisoned. The verdicts were later set aside when Matias Reyes confessed to the crime and was convicted. This documentary special features a rare interview with Meili, and an archival interview Reyes from the ABC vault. Also, interviews with police involved in the case, who speak for the first time since a gag order was lifted.”
TVNZ has revealed the hosts of Celebrity Treasure Island: Survivor New Zealand host and Sunday reporter, Matt Chisholm, and ZM radio’s Drive host Bree Tomasels will front the Fiji-set series when it returns this winter …
On tonight’s Sunday (TVNZ 1, 7.30), Hollywood director James Cameron opens up about his life as a Kiwi farmer, the land he’s developing in the Wairarapa, and his vision of a meat-free, dairy-free world to which he and Peter Jackson want to jointly contribute.
Monday’s Fair Go (TVNZ 1, 7.30) continues to break down how long appliances should last for, explains how to use the Consumer Guarantees Act, and asks what happens when the dream home you’ve bought is not actually yours.
This week’s Real Time With Bill Maher (SoHo/2, various times) features Martin Short, conservative columnist George Will, and former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Observes Deadline: “The guest list was a good one and the result was one of the best wire-to-wire episodes of this 17th season. [They] didn’t share much common ground with their respective contributions to the dishy discourse but each of them brought out the best in Maher, a host whose comedy can sink into low blood-sugar mode when he doesn’t have proper company.”
