Shining Blu-rays: The Best You Can Buy

The 2009 relaunch of Star Trek has gone where none in the sci-fi franchise has gone before on Blu-ray: to win three major prizes in Home Media Magazine’s Third Annual High-Def Awards.

It won Best Theatrical Blu-ray, Best Single Extra for its “Starfleet Vessel Simulator,” and the Consumers’ Choice Award for best overall Blu-ray Disc release.

True Blood: The Complete First Season and Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series Limited Edition shared Best TV on Blu-ray kudos, Best Picture Quality went to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Best Nonfiction Blu-ray for The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, which, frustratingly, has been released here only on DVD.

The awards cap a month in which other notable home entertainment publications have published their own best Blu-rays lists.

Surprisingly, Star Trek wasn’t among Sound + Vision magazine’s 20 Great Blu-ray Discs For Showing Off Your Home Theater or CNET.com’s Top 40 Must Have Blu-ray Discs.

Avatar was on each of these lists but didn’t figure in Home Media Magazine’s awards because it wasn’t released on Blu-ray until 2010.
