Look who’s back … 31 years on, the back-to-the-future franchise reinvents itself with a time nexus (don’t ask) twist that defies encapsulation within this space but changes both the past and the present. So much so that Skynet nemesis Sarah Connor is calling Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator “Pops” when her son, John, sends back his “father” to save her life and … Forget about the fine detail, just sit back and enjoy the full-throttle action, tortuous time continuum conundrums, mostly stellar visual effects and some great one-liners. The new leads of Jason Clarke (Everest) and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) convincingly succeed their predecessors, JK Simmons adds heft and humour as a canny cop, and the writers have fun with the franchise’s legacy.
