Sky Movies Premieres in April

The latest Jurassic Park and Avengers instalments dominate Sky Movies’ April premieres but among the must-see smaller movies are Danny Collins and Black Sea. In the latter, suspense maestro Kevin Macdonald (Touching the Void) dredges up Das Boot-intense dread in a low-budget, voyage-to-the-bottom-of-the-sea nail-biter. Jude Law, in his best role since Enemy at the Gates, heads a fractious salvage crew in a rust-bucket sub scouring the depths of the Black Sea for sunken Russian treasure. Doomed to become as much victims of a shadowy conspiracy as their own paranoia and greed, their fate plays out with agonising finesse as one-by-one their numbers are whittled down to a handful of survivors. Danny Collins is a tender, funny, telling drama about life’s choices. A vintage Al Pacino plays a washed-up, womanising rock star who tries to reconnect with his estranged son (Bobby Cannavale) while shrugging off his soul-destroying legacy to reinvent himself as the singer he always wanted to be. Inspired by the poignant true story of a folk singer who missed out on meeting John Lennon because he received a letter from the ex-Beatle 34 years too late, Danny Collins is virtually pitch perfect.
