Sky Movies Scores Scorsese Mob Drama Series

As foreshadowed by ScreenScribe.tv, Sky TV has confirmed HBO’s successor to The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, will screen here in HD.

The 12-part Prohibition drama, set in 1920s Atlantic City, is from Sopranos scribe Terence Winter, stars Steve Buscemi and includes among its directors Martin Scorsese (who’s also the executive producer).

It will air in double-episodes on Sky Movies in October, within weeks of its US premiere.

“To secure such a premium programme, with phenomenal production values and creative pedigree, is an enormous coup for Sky Movies,” Sky’s director of entertainment programming Travis Dunbar said in a statement.

“This is a truly unique series with the scale of a blockbuster, yet in the classic Scorsese style. Much like The Sopranos, this show is sure to linger in the memory.”

If only Dunbar held another Sky acquisition in the same regard, Dexter.

It, too, is an outstanding HD drama that deserves to air in double-episodes on Sky Movies rather than languish in SD on The Box.

Nonetheless, clearly Boardwalk Empire will have the edge on it production-wise, with the series reportedly being the costliest HBO has yet produced.
