I see Eden has had a schedule revamp as well with a lot more reality filling all its primetime spots. Is this a new strategy for the channel, Philip? It’s definitely further away from its food/lifestyle Choice TV roots. Such a shame the quality dramas have been dropped in favour of TLC reruns. — Leo.
Afraid so, Leo. The shift away from premium drama and movies not considered popular enough for Three was inevitable given the size of the WBD library it’s been able to draw on. With Bravo the most popular ‘challenger’ network, it’s no wonder the channel has opted to emulate. Hence, no more of The Newsreader or Blue Lights. Netflix has picked up Newsreader S1-3 (only S1-2 aired on Eden) but still no platform yet for S3 of Blue Lights.
Such a shame this has happened, can’t we at least have one channel dedicated to high quality drama? I see also Philip that Netflix has pulled out of the WBD race, Sky must be breathing a sigh of relief. Does this mean HBO Max will not launch here in June or will it be replaced by Paramount+? — Leo.
Sadly, Leo, quality drama is now the domain of streaming services rather than FTA. Even the last bastion of the genre, TVNZ 1, long ago offloaded some of its best titles to Saturday nights, the lowest-rating night of the week. Yes, HBO Max will still launch here as announced. Paramount may have sealed the deal with Warner Bros. Discovery but as this commentator succinctly observes: “The acquisition will be the most highly leveraged ever. Paramount now faces a lengthy process to take over Warner and HBO, along with an astronomical financial hole. The deal must be approved by competition authorities in multiple countries.” And as today’s The Australian reports, “Paramount has a tough road to navigate. It needs to get regulatory approval for the Warner deal, which isn’t a sure thing due to likely US, state, and international inquiries … Paramount will need to integrate a much larger company, cut significant costs, and wrestle with ongoing erosion in the core media and cable parts of both Paramount and Warner.” So, for the next year-and-a-half, it will be business as usual for HBO Max. Meanwhile, there’s speculation that Netflix, having pocketed a US$2.8bn fee from WBD (read Paramount) for breaking the deal it signed with the streamer, may now be eyeing up NBCUniversal/Peacock.
I guess we can thank our lucky stars that there are still some gems tucked away on TVNZ+. Interesting to read your analysis of this impending merger especially with the many hoops they have to jump through. I’m quite surprised that Netflix is still on the hunt and that Peacock is in its sights. — Leo.
