SoHo Too Slow With New Shows?

SoHo at last has announced a premiere date for Ray Donovan.

It will go to air here three months after its US debut, on September 29, in The Newsroom’s 8.30 Sunday slot.

By then it will have finished its runs not only on Showtime in the US but also SoHo’s pay-TV equivalents in the UK and Australia.

SoHo also isn’t delivering season four of Boardwalk Empire “express from the US”.

It will screen 8.30 Mondays from September 23, two weeks after its resumption on HBO.

Meanwhile, Ray Donovan star Liev Schreiber and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm team with Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Larry David for the HBO movie, Clear History.

About a disgraced marketing executive who plots revenge against the former boss who got rich at his expense, it will bow on September 8, a month after its HBO premiere.

There’s also no mention of True Blood’s sixth season in SoHo’s September highlights.

Even though it’s rating abysmally in SD on Prime — Friday’s episode averaged only 0.3% of adults 18-49 and 0.5% of adults 25-54 — it seems SoHo subscribers who want to see the HBO flagship in HD will have to wait until October.

Having unveiled the latest seasons of Games of Thrones and Dexter within 24 hours of their US transmissions, with Breaking Bad fans next to get the deluxe deal, it’s disappointing to see SoHo reverting to lags of weeks, months and, in the case of Forbrydelsen’s second season, years (it will screen from September 13 — and in SD, not HD).

There’s no doubt that scheduling a channel like SoHo is logistically challenging.

But if you’re going to charge subscribers extra for premium entertainment, as Sky does with its double pay-walling of SoHo, then you have to do better than the equivalent of NZ Post in delivering these shows.

It may not always be possible to day-&-date them with the US because of everything from rights and time zone issues to scheduling commitments.

But for signature dramas like Ray Donovan, Boardwalk Empire and True Blood, subscribers are entitled to swifter access than the weeks and months that SoHo seems to deem acceptable.

People pay good money for this abysmal level of ‘service’???

  2. I was disappointed that SoHo never showed the awesome HBO series Enlightened, starring Laura Dern. I ended up finding other means of watching it, and canceled my SoHo subscription.
