Spooky Ratings for The Exorcist

How scary is this? Key ratings for The Exorcist in its new late-night slot improved on Sunday.

The first four episodes aired 9.30 Sunday before TV2 bumped the movie spin-off to 11.30.

Amazingly, episode five averaged 3.3% of 25-54s compared to 2.4% for episode four; in the 18-49 demo, the former averaged 2.8% and the latter, 2.6%.

There was a fall-off in 18-39 eyeballs, from 3.1% – 2.4%, but this viewership was still up on the movies that used to air at 11.30.

TVNZ 2 also benefitted from its new 9.30 Sunday show, The Day I Almost Died, rating better than The Exorcist had, averaging 3.5% of 25-54s, 3.2% of 18-49s and 3.9% of 18-39s.

Both Day and Exorcist would have been buoyed by a ratings resurgence for Lethal Weapon at 8.30.

Off the back of a time-slot winning Australian Survivor, it averaged 6.2% of 25-54s, which was up sharply on the previous episode’s 4.5%. The 18-49 viewership was up by nearly a point, to 5.6%, while the 18-39 demo improved from 4.7% to 6.3%.

This was a remarkable turnaround on previous weeks’ ratings and compared favourably to TVNZ 2’s Labour Sunday movie, Jack Reacher, which walloped its rivals with a 25-54 average of 7.2%.

Maybe a 10:30 berth could be even better for The Exorcist, mind you it was Halloween weekend, which would of helped boost interest. I wonder how it’s streaming performance is going.

  2. This particular episode also was “a doozy,” according to TV Guide, which called it “intense and very scary … keeps the twists coming to the jaw-dropping end.”
