Streaming Catch-up: Disney+ Updates

Disney+ soon will premiere a series spun off the movie Cars, the latest Star Wars entry and season two of Reservation Dogs.

It’s not been disclosed when Reservation Dogs S2 will stream but expect it to be late this month or early next given the Taika Waititi-produced series resurfaces this week on Hulu.

Usually, and inexplicably, there’s a 3-4 week window between a programme’s Hulu and Disney+ premieres.

In S1 of the half-hour comedy, four indigenous teenagers took to stealing, scheming and saving to vicariously fulfil a dead friend’s dream of reaching the exotic, mysterious and faraway land of California.

But after a promising start to their criminal endeavours, including the legendary heist of a Flaming Flamers chips truck, and some low-grade grand theft auto, the plan went bust. The gang disbanded, with everyone trying to forge their own paths.

“Season 2 confronts the ‘what now?’ with characteristic confidence and singular style,” Variety says.

“For all the show’s strengths, though, maybe the most persuasive argument in its favour is that for the hundreds of shows premiering every year, there’s still simply nothing else on TV quite like Reservation Dogs … This is a show so self-assured in its own voice and perspective that it’s not just gratifying to watch, but a welcome relief.”

Disney+ has announced the start dates of original series Cars on the Road and Andor.

The former follows Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and his best friend Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) as they head east from Radiator Springs on a cross-country road trip to meet up with Mater’s sister.

“The series is a romp across the country with Lightning McQueen and Mater,” says director Steve Purcell. “Like any real road trip, every day is a new mini-adventure with unexpected twists and turns.”

It will stream from September 8.

New from September 21 will be Andor, a 12-episode series from Lucasfilm that unfolds before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

This new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy focuses on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. It brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved.

Diego Luna returns as Cassian Andor; Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller and Fiona Shaw co-star.

The executive producers are Kathleen Kennedy, Tony Gilroy, Sanne Wohlenberg, Diego Luna and Michelle Rejwan; Gilroy is also the creator and showrunner.
