Critical Condition: White Famous

White Famous | SoHo, 9.00 Thursdays ➢ “White Famous should be better than it is. The half-hour comedy is led by Saturday Night Live veteran Jay Pharoah, a winning impressionist … But White Famous, a shallow show about comedian Floyd Mooney (Pharoah) trying to break into the mainstream, accesses few of its star’s talents. Instead, Pharoah’s […]

New to Blu: September 16 – 22

The Avengers: Age of Ultron “In both its 2D and 3D guises Age of Ultron makes for demo material. Unsurprisingly the 2D looks slightly better than the 3D conversion, but both are generally very impressive. The former boasts superb clarity, outstanding detail and some genuinely picture-perfect moments, allowing you to arguably better appreciate the visual feast […]

Critical Condition: Ballers

Critical Condition: Ballers

“Is this series for you? Certainly not all of you. The language alone may be the deal-breaker, while the sexual objectification of women is appalling — possibly an accurate reflection of some parts of the ‘baller’ culture, but appalling nonetheless. Ballers is for those who cherished the great Ted Kotcheff-directed movie North Dallas Forty, or Oliver Stone’s Any […]

PHIL VS BILL Last Vegas is not quite the comedy of last resort it could have been. It sounds like an over-the-hill Hangover -- four childhood pals in their 60s and 70s reunite for a bachelor party in Sin City -- but Dan Fogelman (Tangled, The Guilt Trip) wrote his screenplay years earlier. While the scenario is safe and predictable, and riddled with wheezing old-geezer gags, the cast’s chemistry, and some gentle observations on aging and friendship, make Vegas more winning than it deserves to be. The only extra of note is a film makers’ commentary.

Bill O’Byrne’s Bargain Bin Blues: Last Vegas

Last Vegas: $$$1/2 Directed by on Turtletaub. Written by Dan Fogelman. Starring Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeeman, Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline. Five ageing Hollywood superstars walk into an amiable comedy about four old guys in Las Vegas. And that’s about all you need to know as to whether you will like Last Vegas. It’s a nice, undemanding […]

Soho – Too Big to Fail?

Soho – Too Big to Fail?

If SoHo’s first-week highlights are any measure, than Sky’s new premium drama channel looks like being too big on quality to fail. Game of Thrones is the biggest drawcard but Emmy-winning or nominated movies like Too Big to Fail and Temple Grandin are none too shabby, either. Launch week also will see the NZ premiere […]
