Zoning in on The Good Life With Ghosts

One of this year’s BAFTA TV nominees, The Enfield Haunting, will premiere next month on The Zone.

The three-part thriller dramatises the spooky events that rocked a family home in suburban North London nearly 40 years ago.

It centres on an 11-year-old girl who tries to convince her family and a paranormal investigator that she’s being terrorised by a poltergeist.

Timothy Spall, Juliet Stephenson and Matthew McFadyen head the cast of this 2015 production that broke ratings records when it screened on Sky Living in the UK.

It’s also in the running for a best miniseries BAFTA, competing with Doctor Foster, London Spy and This Is England 90, while co-star Eleanor Worthington-Cox is a contender in the best drama supporting actress category.

The Guardian dubbed it “an outstanding chiller of gothic goings-on” that’s “beautifully directed and packed with big scares and superb performances”.

And The Telegraph likened it to The Good Life with ghosts: “The scares, when they came, were effective.

“Furniture flew across the room, marbles and teapots suddenly acquired minds of their own, canaries died from fright, people levitated and curtains came to chilling life.”

Variety wasn’t as bowled over. While acknowledging “some genuinely spooky moments … this is more a psychological study than conventional horror”.

The Independent was also underwhelmed: “The Enfield Haunting had me thinking fondly of truly terrifying retro horror like Hammer House of Horror’s 1980s creepfests The House that Bled to Death or The Silent Scream.

“By my third hour with the ghostly gang in Enfield, I was crying out for a bleeding ceiling or a child’s birthday party ruined by guts and gore.”

❏ The Enfield Haunting will screen 8.30 Thursdays from May 12.
