Three Celebrates Ten-Year High

Three’s top-rating election coverage on Saturday helped the network to record its highest weekly share of 25-54 year-olds in more than 10 years.

Newshub Decision 17 Election Special won the night not just in the demographic it targets most but also in the 18-49 and 18-39 demos.

According to the broadcaster, it outperformed the 1 News Election Special by 23% with an average 25-54 audience of 176,294 versus 143,801.

Its 25-54 average — 9.1 rating/37.9 share compared to TVNZ 1’s 7.4 rating/29.4 share and Maori TV’s 0.0 rating/0.1 share — contributed to a weekly average share of 27.8%, Three’s highest since 2007.

The week started strongly, with the season premiere of Grand Designs NZ, the return of Lost & Found, and Killer Women With Piers Morgan dominating their Tuesday night slots in the core commercial demos.

GDNZ won the 7.30 hour with averages of 9.1% of 25-54, 7.0% of 18-49, 6.5% of 18-39 and 9.5% of household shoppers with kids, versus 3.9% – 6.8% averages for TVNZ 2’s Australian Survivor.

TVNZ 1’s Face the Classroom averaged 1.9% – 4.2% of these demos to finish third.

The only TVNZ show to beat Three’s line-up was TVNZ 2’s Filthy Rich in the 18-39 demo.

But TVNZ 2 dominated Monday with Shortland Street, Life in Pieces and Wentworth, with the Aussie prison drama locking up 2-3 times the viewership of Three’s Tin Star (although its lead-out, Blue Bloods, won in the 25-54 and 18-49 demos).

Three’s premiere of Slice of Paradise on Wednesday averaged 4.5% of 25-54 compared to 6.3% for Australian Survivor.

Both lost to the second half of TVNZ 1’s leaders debate but its 8.30 drama Offspring finished behind TVNZ 2’s comedies and Three’s NCIS: Los Angeles.

However, TVNZ 1 recovered at 9.30, with 20/20 (3.3%) out-rating both Love Island (2.3%) and Hawaii Five-O (1.5%).

TVNZ 1’s Dear Murderer sunk to season low of 1.9% of 25-54 on Thursday, which was even lower than lead-out Coronation Street (2.1%).

It was crushed by TVNZ 2’s First Dates  see-sawing with Three’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines: each averaged 5.3% from 8.30-9.30 and the movie went on to average 5.0% to win the 9.30-10.30 hour.

Despite its Emmy triumph last week, Prime’s Big Little Lies tanked, drawing 0.0% of viewers 25-54 — the same as its new comedy double-bill of Man With a Plan and The Odd Couple.

Three dominated Friday with The Graham Norton Show and 7 Days winning the four core demos and Fail Army three.
