Three to Launch Extra Newshub Bulletin

Fears that Three’s new owner Discovery would cut back on local news and current affairs are proving unfounded, with the broadcaster announcing a new Newshub slot.

Moreover, Discovery says it will continue to develop Three’s “news product” to help grow the business.

Newshub Live at 11.30AM will screen weekdays from February 1 — just half-an-hour before TVNZ 1’s midday bulletin.

The same day Seven Sharp will resume its 7pm weekday run on TVNZ 1, two weeks later than Three’s resumption of time-slot rival The Project.

Hopefully Discovery’s next priority will be to beef up Newshub resourcing so it can add more HD field cameras to spruce up its presentation.

Here’s the media release:

NEWSHUB EXPANDS FOOTPRINT WITH THE LAUNCH OF NEWSHUB LIVE AT 11.30AM

Newshub is expanding its broadcast news footprint on Three with the launch of a new daytime bulletin, Newshub Live at 11.30AM. The bulletin launches on February 01, 2021 and will air weekdays. It joins existing Newshub bulletins Newshub Live at 4.30PM, Newshub Live at 6PM and Newshub Late.

Glen Kyne, [Discovery’s] General Manager, New Zealand & Australia, says: “At a time when news is more important than ever, we are not only committed to local news but also actively looking for ways to continue developing our news product as part of the future growth of our business.”

Sarah Bristow, Director of News, Newshub, says: “This bulletin is the perfect addition to our portfolio and will bridge the gap on Three between The AM Show and our Newshub Live at 4.30PM bulletin, offering our audiences multiple touch points across the day.

“After the uncertainty in the news media over the past year, it is brilliant to begin 2021 with an expansion of our Newshub services.”

In addition to its news bulletins, Three and Newshub also have news and current affairs shows The AM Show, The Project, Newshub Nation and The Hui in its portfolio as well as online news platform newshub.co.nz

I see Paramount+ will start in Australia in the middle of the year. I wonder if New Zealand will be included ?

  2. Yes, it will Trevor. ViacomCBS has grouped NZ and Australia as a single territory. There may be some content differences, due to existing licensing deals, but expect Paramount+ to launch in both markets at the same time.

  3. YAY, that’s good news Philip. I quite like their movies. I wonder if we will also get HBO Max this year. I see they are going international 🙂

  4. I’d be surprised if HBO Max comes here this year, Trevor. The initial roll-out’s in Latin America and Europe. I would think HBO’s relationships with Sky and Foxtel in this part of the world would stymie its streaming service until these multi-year licensing deals expire in 2022-2023.

  5. Oh well, perhaps in the next year or so 🙂

  6. Quite surprised they are re entering late morning/midday news market with this. Hopefully it lasts and doesn’t get axed when cost savings need to be implemented. Wonder if this latest moves will prompt TVNZ to relaunch 1News at 4.30 or a Weekend Breakfast to stay ahead of Newshub.

  7. I see it as a positive sign of Discovery’s local investment, Leo, and a reflection of how there’s been an upsurge of interest in TV news and current affairs because of Covid-19 and US politics.
