Tonight in HD: April 19

SoHo Highlight: Top Boy (Sky 10, 8.30) In part two of four, Dushane and Sully find themselves in debt to Raikes and under increasing pressure to retrieve their stash from Kamale, Dushane’s ambitions begin to spill into the lives of his family, and Lisa shows signs of improvement. How realistic is this series about a drug-riddled housing estate? Very, according to Franklyn Addo in The Guardian: “Having lived on an estate in Hackney for the majority of my life, I have witnessed first-hand many of the issues that the productions aimed to address.” But observer critic Phil Hogan accused it off playing too safe: “Top Boy was often compelling in its twists and turns, and its cast of young talent was eerily good, but it seemed too careful not to judge, steering a path between two evils – on the one side the risk of glamorising gang culture, on the other the risk of making a caricature out of hard but everyday lives.” ✮✮✮✮

Home & Away (TV3, 5.30) Brax is thrust back into Leah’s life; Roo and Marilyn attempt an intervention to encourage John to be a better housemate; VJ gets in trouble with the police. ✮✮

Friends (TV2, 6.30, R) Charlton Heston finds Joey in a compromising position during a movie shoot; Rachel regrets asking Ross for a favour. ✮✮✮✮

Shortland Street (TV2, 7.00) Ula and Evan battle with the truth; Bree’s outrageous lie grows beyond Brooke’s help; Daniel can’t let Lana help him. ✮✮✮

Once Upon a Time (TV2, 8.30) Sidney asks Emma to help him expose the corruption that mayor Regina has unleashed on Storybrooke, and King Leopold must be careful what he wishes for when he is granted three wishes by a genie. Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito guest stars. Said the AV Club: “Fruit of the Poisonous Tree has Esposito pulling fairy tale double duty in my favorite fairyback twist of the series yet, revealing that Regina’s Magic Mirror is actually the Genie of Agrabah, the big blue guy from Aladdin. The story of how the Genie enters the court of King Leopold, Snow White’s father (Richard Schiff of The West Wing), and gains the affections of Leopold’s new queen, Regina, is the most captivating fairyback yet, giving viewers a reason to care about the Evil Queen for the first time.” ✮✮

The Finder (TV3, 8.30, 5.1) Amateur magician Preston Miller seeks Walter’s help to find his assistant who vanished after a failed attempt at an ambitious disappearing act. ✮✮

Crash Course (TV2, 11.30, F) Greg Murphy takes a look at the standard of New Zealand’s roads and kicks up the dust to show us how to survive on a one-star road. ✮✮
