Tonight in HD: April 8

Sky Movies Premiere: Rango (Sky 20, 4.40, 5.1) Clint Eastwood has a cameo of sorts in this rootin’, tootin’, six-gun shootin’ ‘toon that gloriously evokes the spirit of the Western. It’s named after a chameleon with an identity crisis who becomes an unlikely Boot Hill hero in a dry gulch town where a Chinatown-ish water-siphoning plot is afoot. What ensues is a wondrously goofy frontier romp that abounds in movie homages and atmospheric animation that would do John Ford and Sergio Leone proud with its monumental grandeur and true-grit wit. Gore Verbinski ‘directs’ Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Bill Nighy, Timothy Olyphant, Alfred Molina, Ray Winstone, Harry Dean Stanton and Ned Beatty. (2011) ✮✮✮✮✮

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Grown Ups (TV One, 7.00, F) Nigel Latta reviews the ups and downs that consume adult life. ✮✮✮✮

Touch (TV3, 8.30, 5.1) Martin discovers that a homeless man’s obsession with numbers is similar to Jake’s, and he undertakes a series of tasks that involve African boys in a dance competition and a woman at a music festival. ✮✮

Enlightened (TV One, 10.00) Jealous of Krista’s good fortune and fed up with her humiliation at Abaddonn, Amy considers leaving the company for a socially responsible job at a homeless shelter. ✮✮✮

The Almighty Johnsons (TV3, 10.40, R) Lust, vengeance and some really dodgy stuff involving food. ✮✮✮

Sky Movies Premiere: The Next Three Days (Sky 20, 8.30, 5.1) If you’ve seen the French thriller, Anything For Her (Pour Elle), watching this Hollywood remake will feel like drawn-out déjà-vu. The original masked the implausibility of its suspenseful plot — a schoolteacher plans his wrongfully imprisoned wife’s breakout — with subtle family dynamics and a breathless running time of barely 90 minutes whereas The Next Three Days is half-an-hour longer, largely due to sentimental excesses that culminate in a spectacularly stupid car stunt. Paul Haggis directs Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks and Brian Dennehy. (2011) ✮✮✮
