SoHo Highlight: Camelot (Sky 10, 8.30, 5.1) After killing her father, the king, Morgan forges an alliance with his most powerful enemy; after Merlin explains his heritage, Arthur travels to Camelot to claim the throne and faces the wrath of Morgan. Said The Hollywood Reporter of the latest period porn from Starz, the home of Spartacus: Blood and Sand: “Camelot probably falls short of Borgias on the gravitas scale while finding some common ground with Tudors. But it looks like something from the Royal Shakespeare Company when compared to Starz’s other effort, Spartacus, and its spinoff, Gods of the Arena of Penises.” The Daily Telegraph dubbed it “another big-budget swords-and-sorcery drama series leavened with plenty of boobs” that’s “all a bit ridiculous. When you think of the muck and squalor of sixth-century Britain, you might not picture these clean-limbed, clear-skinned youths with their gleaming smiles and artfully tousled hair.” The Guardian was even more blunt: “Historical drama just got (even more) stupid.” But Guardian TV critic Sam Wollaston was kinder: “It’s soft porn basically, a romp … Like The Tudors, only a few hundred years earlier. Just as silly, just as fun. And this time the historians can’t get all upset because it’s not history.” ✭✭✭✭

But the film doesn’t have the boosters, or thrusters, or whatever, to elevate it to more ambitious heights; it’s weighed down by tired conventions and a general sense of having missed its moment.” Dan Fogler, Jay Baruchel and Kristen Bell star. (2008) ✭✭✭
