Tonight in HD: December 27

SoHo Highlight: Boardwalk Empire (Sky 10, 9.30, 5.1)  While Nucky barters in Ireland, Jimmy eyes an alcohol supply close to home. “Much of Battle Of The Century has to do with such tense alliances, and which party in them has the upper hand,” the AV Club said of episode nine. It’s also notable for what Time called “a wrenching incidence of a girl’s fate and natural suffering, in contrast to a series that has been about men dooming themselves or bringing suffering on others … The contrast here to the other plotlines developing in Battle of the Century is clear: a little girl is engaged in a battle she didn’t ask for, while everywhere else in this story, men try to whip up wars of choice.” ✭✭✭✭

Friends (TV2, 6.30, R) Eager to spend time with Rachel, Ross pretends his building’s washroom is rat-infested so he can join her at the laundrette. ✭✭✭

Modern Family (TV3, 7.00, 5.1, R) Claire loves Halloween, and has spent countless hours creating the Haunted Dunphy House for the trick-or-treaters; she gives each family member a role to play, but none of it goes quite right. ✭✭✭✭

The Celebrity Apprentice (TV2, 8.30) Previous winners Piers Morgan, Joan Rivers and Bret Michaels step back into the boardroom to test the remaining celebrities. ✭✭

Fringe (TV2, 2.30, R) Peter, Walter, Olivia and Broyles pursue a strange and deadly occurrence in Philadelphia where a bomb blew up inside a train station but left no trace of any explosive device. ✭✭✭✭

Sky Movies Greats Premiere: Alfie (Sky 22, 8.30, 5.1) The signature line isn’t uttered until the innovative closing credits of this redundant re-make but by then you won’t give a toss about Alfie. As played by Jude Law, and relocated to Manhattan, the Vespa-riding womaniser is a Son of Alfie cliché stranded in a much more sophisticated sea of sexual politics. Omar Epps, Marisa Tomei and Susan Sarandon co-star. (2004) ✭✭
