Tonight in HD: December 29

SoHo Highlight: How to Make It in America (Sky 10, 8.00, 5.1) Ben and Cam plan a CRISP pop-up event; Rachel still holds a flame for Ben; Rene has a new billboard; Domingo expands his business. Said Slant magazine of the season-two premiere: “While childhood best friends, ambitious artist Ben (Bryan Greenberg) and hustling promoter Cam (Victor Rasuk), and their struggling clothing brand are still the narrative centre of the show, the second season sees a greater interest in exploring the social lives of late-twentysomethings at various stages of success and maturity. No longer a show about the fashion business, per se, How to Make It in America has become an ethnographic portrait of ambitious, optimistic urbanites who still don’t know what to do with all of their ambition and optimism … America is as much about how to succeed as it is about how to ‘make it’ through the transitional period between youthful idealism and adulthood.” Alas, there won’t be a season three — HBO has just axed America, along with Hung (which resumes next month on TV One) and Bored to Death (which SoHo will premiere in February). ✭✭✭✭

Friends (TV2, 6.30, R)  There’s a blackout in the city; Ross tries to tell Rachel of his feelings for her. ✭✭✭

Modern Family (TV3, 7.00, 5.1, R) Everyone gathers at a restaurant to celebrate Manny’s birthday, who’s experiencing a mini-life crisis about getting older. Said the AV Club: “Rarely has the show managed so much heart in so many unexpected places. There’s Manny in his immaculate suit reclining on the inflatable island in the pool, trying to recapture the childhood that Jay’s offhand ‘You were born 16’ comment has made him realise he’s missed. ‘Got it last Christmas. Never took it out of the box,’ Manny muses in a perfect simulation of middle-aged regret.” ✭✭✭✭

Movie: Speed 2: Cruise Control (TV3, 8.30, 5.1, R) Washed-up sequel that misses the boat, or should that be bus? Only Sandra Bullock reprises her role from the original, although Jan De Bont again directs. The action switches to a luxury cruise ship where another mad bomber (Willem Dafoe) threatens to sink it quicker than the Titanic (which is what this film deservedly did at the box office). Temuera Morrison co-stars to little effect.

Chuck (TV2, 10.30)  Chuck and Sarah suspect Casey is carrying out private missions; Chuck worries the CIA’s seemingly perfect new operatives will make him useless. ✭✭✭

Lie to Me (TV3, 11.40, 5.1, R) The murder of a teenage girl leads the Lightman Group to a highly competitive college-prep school where getting to the head of the class means everything. ✭✭

Diplomatic Immunity (TV One, 11.45, R)  Comedy about a disgraced New Zealand Foreign Affairs high-flier who’s sent to The Most Royal Kingdom of Feausi to straighten out the consulate staff. ✭✭✭

Criminal Minds (TV One, 12.15, R) ✭✭

Mental (TV3, 12.40, 5.1) Gallagher treats a woman who believes she is seven months pregnant – but is not pregnant at all.  ✭✭

The Vampire Diaries (TV2, 2.30, R) ✭✭✭
