Tonight in HD: January 9
SoHo Highlight: Five Days (Sky 10, 5.1, 8.30) In part one of five, the police launch a desperate search to find a mother and her two children who go missing in different circumstances. This 2007 HBO-BBC co-production originally aired on TV3 but its SoHo presentation is the first time it’s screened here in HD. As The Independent said: “It has the feel of Prime Suspect coupled with the running clock of 24, plus a good cast.” The New York Times called it “riveting because it weaves the most familiar milestones of a major homicide investigation — the news conferences, police interrogations and family meltdowns — into a less predictable and intricately layered narrative that averts clichés without diluting the suspense”. Five Days spun off a 2010 sequel as well as a short-lived police drama called Hunter that screens on UK TV. Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville and Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs) star. ✭✭✭✭
Friends (TV2, 6.30, R) Joey sets up Chandler on a blind date with Janice; Phoebe, Rachel and Monica build a boyfriend bonfire in their apartment. ✭✭✭✭
Modern Family (TV3, 7.00, 5.1, R) Mitchell tells Cam that he can’t dress up as Fizbo the clown for Lily’s second birthday. Guest stars Matt Dillon and Shelley Long are a drag, although the latter’s return as Jay’s ex-wife sparks a great Jaws gag. ✭✭✭✭
Drug Bust (TV3, 7.30, R) A dazed marijuana grower gets a rude awakening; the Otahuhu Tactical Crime Unit raids a notorious P dealer; a young weed smoker refuses to come clean after his parents call the police. ✭✭✭
Criminal Minds (TV One, 8.30, R) The BAU team profiles a serial killer who uses the Internet as his hunting ground, bringing a whole new meaning to the term “social networking”. This is the last of the fifth-season repeats for the time being; next week season seven starts. ✭✭
Shameless (TV2, 11.10) Frank has some settlement money coming his way. The only catch – he needs his ex-wife Monica’s signature on the documents. ✭✭✭✭
