SoHo Highlight: Mad Men (Sky 10, 8.30, 5.1) Lane faces indebtedness; the firm prepares to pull out all the stops when it gets a second chance to land Jaguar as a client; Don tries to comfort Joan when she reaches her breaking point. “What more could you want?” The Hollywood Reporter asked of this “thoroughly entertaining” episode entitled Christmas Waltz. “It was like a Christmas present itself. People have been dying to get Don and Joan ‘together,’ and they had a grand old time pretending to be married, taking the Jaguar out, spending the daylight hours drinking in a bar while having fantastic, crush-worthy dialogue without crossing the line and losing the respect they obviously have for each other.” But Newsday thought it “more of a cultural snapshot of a moment in time rather than a carefully developed episode with elements pointing to or refracting larger themes — other than the obvious and usual suspects: alienation, self-delusion, narcissism, isolation and so forth.” ✮✮✮✮✮
