Tonight in HD: March 11

Movie: The Dark Knight (TV2, 8.30, R) Holy high definition! The darkest Batman movie is screening in HD for the first time on network TV, making it the best Knight’s entertainment yet. True, the strung together plot about The Joker terrorising Gotham is riddled with holes bigger than the entrance to the Batcave. But visually and stylistically it nails the grit of the graphic novel while maximising cinematic spectacle and intensity. The Dark Knight’s free-to-air HD premiere bodes well for TV2 running more modern classics in HD from its Warner Bros stable. Christopher Nolan directs Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart. Sky Movies Premiere: Larry Crowne (Sky 20, 8.30, 5.1) An unemployed middle-aged man reinvents himself when he goes back to university. Tom Hanks directs and stars in a screenplay he co-wrote with Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding); Julia Roberts co-stars. While a spectacular box office flop, The Washington Post recommended it as "a light and breezy, recession-themed romantic comedy; Up in the Air without all the angst and introspection". (2011) ✭✭✭

Dark Knight wasn’t 5.1 and didn’t look HD either. No HD logo on the titles either? Wassup TVNZ?

  2. I don’t think that TVNZ broadcast anything in 5.1 sound yet. Not really acceptable when you consider how long TV3 and Sky have been screening programmes with 5.1 sound.

  3. There has been the odd thing in 5.1, but quite random and inconsistent, but above all, rare.
