SoHo Cinema: Game Change (Sky 10, 8.30, 5.1) HBO’s adaptation of the best-seller provides an insider’s look at John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign and how the choice was made to select Sarah Palin as his running mate. Recount’s Jay Roach directs Julianne Moore, Ed Harris and Woody Harrelson. “The film isn’t trying to break ground with revelations,” The Hollywood Reporter observed, “so what it comes down to is whether Game Change is a good movie, as opposed to a balanced documentary. For the most part, it is.” People magazine said “comparisons to The Iron Lady, a sloppy movie that has Meryl Streep in roaring good form, are inevitable. Is Game Change better? You betcha.”  The New York Times praised Moore for her “sharp-edged but not unsympathetic portrait of a flawed heroine, coloured more in pity than in admiration” while Variety singled out Harrelson’s GOP strategist as “equally compelling”. But Time argued the docudrama “gets distracted by its own shiny object, Palin”. (2012) ✮✮✮✮
