Tonight in HD: May 29
Season Highlight: NCIS (TV3, 8.30, 5.1) When a high-level security Navy reservist is found dead, Gibbs goes face-to-face with Dr Ryan of the PsyOps Division to uncover the truth behind the suicide. Jamie Lee Curtis guest stars and is why the episode works so well, argues TV Fanatic, dubbing Ryan “a uniquely formidable ‘brain gamer’ and an adversary who temporarily threw Gibbs off his game – not an easy feat. Despite portraying a character we were meant to intensely distrust and dislike from the get-go, Curtis turned in a strong, nuanced performance and commanded the screen alongside Mark Harmon throughout.” The Los Angeles Times said Curtis’ “bold return to network TV … provided a kick in the pants to the police procedural’s long-simmering sexual tension with Harmon … After eight-and-a-half seasons and more than 200 episodes, it seems like Special Agent Gibbs (Harmon) may finally find himself a love interest.” Incidentally, Curtis and Harmon played a betrothed couple in the 2003 movie Freaky Friday and the title of the episode, Psych Out, echoes the name of the movie for which Curtis’ mother, Janet Leigh, is most remembered: Psycho. ✮✮✮

The Middle (TV2, 7.30, 5.1) Axl, Sue and Brick call a sit down meeting with Frankie and Mike and ask to be given the chance to do what they’re supposed to do – without being harassed by their parents. “The Hecks really put on a show this week,” said CliqueClaque. “After a fantastic opening sequence filled with all manner of kid craziness, Frankie yelling, and Mike handing out ultimatums, the episode settled into a great display of what would happen if our kids took over their own oversight.” But the AV Club didn’t think The Sit Down a stand-out episode: “Even with a solid concept to work with, the whole affair somehow still felt flimsier than usual.” ✮✮✮✮
