Tonight in HD: May 30

Series Premiere: Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms (TV3, 8.30) Anthony ‘Snoddy’ Spencer discover the seductive world of the outlaw bikie — and the formidable force that is Jock Ross. “Is Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms in danger of trivialising one of Australia’s most horrific crimes – the Milperra massacre?” asked the Herald Sun. “Six bikies and an innocent 14-year-old girl died after a violent shootout between the rival Comancheros and Bandidos bikie gangs on Father’s Day 1984 and 28 people were injured. [The] first episode of the six-part series was little more than Underbelly on two wheels. Like Nine’s gangland franchise, Bikie Wars featured plenty of violence and nudity smothered in a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack.” The Age said “the biggest problem with Bikie Wars early on is that for a show about bikies and debauchery, it’s a tad mundane” — but thought the second episode an improvement — and reported a gang enforcer who lived through the period claimed the show was full of errors and lazy stereotypes. ✮✮✮✮

Sky Movies Premiere: Prom (Sky 20, 8.30, 5.1) Quipped The Washington Post: “For movie lovers, prom evokes cinematic memories of pig’s blood in buckets, virginity-losing contests and Pygmalion-style makeovers. You’ll find none of those things in Prom, Disney’s chaste take on the annual high school spectacular. Nor will you find much excitement, tension or resemblance to actual teen culture in this whitewash of the quintessential rite of passage.” But the New York Times pointed out “there are new tweeners every year. To them, the characters and plot devices in this perfectly competent film might well seem fresh.” (2011) ✮✮
