Tonight in HD: May 4

Network Movie Premiere: An Education (TV One, 8.30, 5.1) Kiwi Finola Dwyer (Dean Spanley) co-produced this best-picture contender that also was Oscar-nominated for best actress (Carey Mulligan) and adapted screenplay (About a Boy’s Nick Hornby). It’s Mulligan’s extraordinary performance that anchors Hornby’s captivating but not always convincing cautionary coming-of-age tale. She plays a wilful, middle-class teenager suffocating in staid ‘60s suburbia whose Oxford ambitions are jeopardised by her infatuation with a much older man (Peter Sarsgaard) with a seemingly glamourous lifestyle. Impeccably cast and meticulously filmed, An Education will occupy your thoughts long after it ends. One Day’s Lone Scherfig directs; Rosamund Pike and Olivia Williams co-star. (2009) ✮✮✮✮

Glee (TV3, 7.30, 5.1) Will assigns the glee club a Spanish singing assignment, and enlists the help of his musically-inclined night school teacher (guest star Ricky Martin). "Martin carried on the Gwyneth Paltrow tradition of pretty great guest teacher cameos, but the rest of the episode found us back in scatterbrained plot territory," Rolling Stone said. And while The Hollywood Reporter agreed "the episode didn't further many of the show's storylines much (Mercedes and Sam are seemingly still at an impasse), the hour did feature a ton of funny and sometimes ironic one-liners." ✮✮✮

Home & Away (TV3, 5.30) Roo, Harvey and Lottie spend time together; Dex tries to turn his chess skills into cash; Heath keeps after Bianca, rattling Liam. ✮✮

Friends (TV2, 6.30, R) Emily cannot forgive Ross for calling her Rachel during their wedding vows; Rachel goes on the newlyweds’ honeymoon trip. ✮✮✮✮

Shortland Street (TV2, 7.00) Lana favours one flatmate to repel another; Murray’s plans are roadblocked; Bella’s good deed leads to disaster. ✮✮✮

The Graham Norton Show (TV3, 8.30) With Mark Ruffalo, comedian John Bishop and rapper Nicki Minaj. ✮✮✮✮

The Vampire Diaries (TV2, 10.30, 5.1) When Elijah gives Damon and Stefan a dangerous ultimatum that puts Elena in danger, they turn to Alaric and Meredith for help. ✮✮✮

Primeval (TV2, 11.30) Following a displaced raptor through an anomaly, Matt ends up in Victorian London. ✮✮✮

Numb3rs (TV3, 12.15, 5.1) The death of a visionary scientist takes a strange twist when the prime suspect turns out to be a super computer. ✮✮

SoHo Highlight: Normal (Sky 10, 8.30, 5.1) Said Variety of this HBO vehicle for Tom Wilkinson and Jessica Lange: “Story of a middle-aged man preparing to undergo a sex change and of the woman who slowly comes to accept him is rendered with sincerity and restraint by director Jane Anderson.” Anderson has written and directed one other movie since, The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio (2005) and wrote the season two episode of Mad Men, The Gold Violin. (2003) ✮✮✮✮
