SoHo Highlight: Too Big to Fail (Sky 10, 8.30, 5.1) This 2011 HBO dramatisation of how US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson tried to avert the 2008 financial crisis boasts a cast gilt-edge enough to win it an Emmy Award for outstanding casting. The fact it didn’t snare any of its other 11 nominations, including best miniseries or telemovie, was almost as big a shock as Lehman Brothers declaring bankruptcy. While Slate dismissed it as a “tiresome connect-the-dots summary“, and the Boston Globe deemed it a mundane docudrama — “ultimately, its scope is too big, and it fails” — most mainstream critics agreed with The Wall Street Journal — “takes on the urgency of an imminent nuclear disaster” — and The Hollywood Reporter, which dubbed it an entertaining “economics lesson from hell“. James Woods, Paul Giamatti, William Hurt, Topher Grace, Cynthia Nixon, Kathy Baker and Edward Asner star; Breaking Bad writer/producer Peter Gould adapted the book by New York Times journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin, who has a cameo as a reporter. ✫✫✫✫

  1. “SoHo Highlight: Too Big to Fail (Sky 10, 8.30)” … I wonder if these programmes will eventually filter down to Prime for the plebs like me who don’t want Sky any longer?
