Tonight in HD: November 2

Friends (TV2, 6.30, R) Joey and Phoebe conspire to reunite Ross and Rachel, and set them up on the worst blind dates ever. ✫✫✫

Shortland Street (TV2, 7.00) Lana is unconvinced by a change of heart; Jonathon gets his hopes up; Jill’s best laid plans end in disaster. ✫✫✫

Bigger Better Faster Stronger (TV3, 8.00, R) Can this Kiwi variation on James May’s Man Lab rate bigger and better second time around? ✫✫✫

Underbelly: Razor (TV3, 8.30) Tilly realises the best way to one-up Kate Leigh – and to distract herself from her philandering hubby – is to buy her best sly-grog saloon right out from under her. According to Change the Channel, this isn’t one of the better instalments in what’s been an uneven series: “Not only aren’t the episodes of Razor consistently of the same quality but because they shift focus between a wide variety of characters the direction of the show is inconsistent as well.” ✫✫✫✫

The Borgias (TV3, 9.30, 5.1) Lucrezia turns her attentions to a handsome young stable boy as a temporary escape from her loveless marriage. ✫✫✫✫

Harry’s Law (TV One, 10.00) Harry grows increasingly concerned about Malcolm’s association with the over-the-top Tommy and their lawsuit; after Chunhua is attacked, Damien takes justice into his own hands. Blog critics thought this the weakest of the episodes to date, largely because star Kathy Bates plays such a minor role: “She basically acts as a Greek chorus in this episode, coming in at crucial moments to give her opinion on issues. This is a huge let down when she was the main focus of the first three episodes.” ✫✫

V (TV2, 10.35) Anna and Diana are face to face for the first time in 15 years; Erica seeks to find if the Vs did something to her while she was pregnant with Tyler. ✫✫✫✫

CSI (TV3, 11.20, 5.1, R) The CSIs investigate a murder at a bowling alley after a critical piece of evidence is revealed during a championship match. ✫✫

Soho Highlight: Weeds (Sky 10, 9.30, 5.1) Season six of the addictive, albeit increasingly absurd, comedy/drama about a dope-dealing soccer mum, is the first to screen here in HD. According to HitFix, it “gets off to a good start“, with the Botwins being uprooted yet again after Nancy’s son, Shane, kills Pilar, a powerful go-between in Mexican drug cartel circles. But the New York Daily News wondered while Weeds can still deliver a buzz … it may be burning down toward the roach”. And Slate said the result is both good and bad: “On the one hand, Weeds feels fresh again. On the other, the writers still don’t know what sort of show they’re making, and the supporting cast keeps getting shoehorned into new roles. It’s as consistent as you’d expect a show written by stoners to be, and if you’re not ready for the shifts between the madcap and the morose, you’re going to be constantly disappointed.”  ✫✫✫✫
