Tonight in HD: November 25

SoHo Highlight: Grey Gardens (Sky 10, 8.30, 5.1) Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange star as ex-high society queens Big and Little Edie Beale. The aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis had it all — yet over 40 years their lives went from riches to rags. Then, in 1975, the Maysles brothers (Gimme Shelter, When We Were Kings) made a documentary that turned them into cult sensations. Variety thought the HBO dramatisation “an impeccably rendered piece, down to the smallest details — the kind of lush, meticulous little parcel that relatively few outlets these days have the means or latitude to cultivate.” The Los Angeles Times praised the “amazing performances” and said Grey Gardens is “like its subjects, a brilliant, moving, hilarious and mesmerising mess of a movie that miraculously captures what made the Beales such iconic characters.” But New York Magazine was less impressed: “The original documentary may have been predatory, but it captured something powerful, the face of failed optimism, the many meanings of the word ‘spoiled’. Sometimes it’s better to let strange be strange.” For more on the actual Grey Gardens, see this interior design blog. ✭✭✭✭

The loss of Human Target with only five episodes to go (the show was cancelled after two seasons) confirms that TVNZ’s programmers are the most clueless bunch in broadcasting!

  2. TV2’s announcer also got it epically wrong at the conclusion of tonight’s Supernatural, it was the season final not the last episode ever, D’OH!
