Tonight in HD: October 28
Friends (TV2, 6.30, R) Rachel is desperate to get back to work for fear they’ll dump her, and Phoebe gets a job as an extra on Joey’s soap opera. ✫✫✫
Shortland Street (TV2. 7.00, R) Callum is indebted to his enemy; Ula’s rival wraps her up; Maxwell is overcome by lust. ✫✫✫
The X Factor USA (TV3, 7.30, 5.1) Continuing on from Thursday’s episode, the judges coach the finalists in their categories, prompting the New York Times to observe the right eliminations were made and “some welcome testiness” had finally worked its way into the show. “But so did lots of unwelcome choreography, headache-inducing lighting and overorchestration. Some of the singers in this live show were more or less swallowed up by their absurdly excessive production numbers as The X Factor abandoned its roots as a singing competition and turned into something resembling a bad Broadway musical.” ✫✫✫
The Bachelor (TV2, 8.30) New season — and the first to air here in HD. Brad Womack – considered by many to be “the most hated Bachelor” in the series’ history – returns for another chance at love as he chooses from among 30 women. ✫✫
The Graham Norton Show (TV3, 8.30, R) With Stanley Tucci, Jimmy Carr, Miriam Margolyes and Bruno Mars, who chats and performs Grenade. This will be the first time Norton squares off against TV One’s Jonathan Ross Show, whose slot Norton inherited on the BBC. ✫✫✫✫
Supernatural (TV2, 10.30) Great Scott! Sam and Dean are sent back in time to the Wild West so they can meet Samuel Colt and seek his help in defeating Eve. Reckons the AV Club, which graded the episode B-: “There’s not much in the way of cohesion here, and so much of the jokes and story ideas lately seem to come from ripping off movies and treating it like an homage. Like tonight’s episode, Frontierland, whose nods to Back to the Future Part III went past riffing and straight into outright line swiping.” There also are references to James Bond, Deadwood, Blazing Saddles and The Hangover. ✫✫✫✫
Human Target (TV2, 11.30) When Ilsa’s friend is held hostage, Chance must turn to the only person he knows has information to help rescue her: his archenemy Baptiste, who has been banished to a Russian prison. ✫✫✫
NCIS (TV3, 11.45, 5.1, R) While investigating the death of a marine, the team finds themselves intertwined in an inner city gang war. ✫✫
CSI: Miami (TV3, 12.45, 5.1, R) Deadly jellyfish are used as a murder weapon, and a mysterious woman from Jesse’s past returns. ✫✫
