TV Ratings: X Factor NZ and Transformers Tops for TV3

The season finale of The X Factor NZ proved to be a top-rating swansong, helping TV3 to win Monday night in all the commercial demographics.

It averaged 8.2% – 10.8% of the key demos but was neck-and-neck with TV2’s My Kitchen Rules (6.9% – 8.7%) in the 25-54 stakes.

The show’s popularity helped a repeat of The Best of The Graham Norton Show (3.9% – 4.6%) to win its hour in three of the four core demos.

TV2, which traditionally dominates Mondays, finished second with The Mysteries of Laura (4.5% – 5.5%) and Schitt’s Creek (2.3% – 4.5%).

TV1’s Stalker averaged 2.8% – 4.2% off the back of Code: 1’s 5.7% – 7.4% while lead-out Forever eked out 1.5% – 3.8%.

Monday was the second consecutive night TV3 won in a row, with Sunday’s XFNZ (8.4% – 10.6%) and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (5.4% – 8.3%) winning in all the key demos, too.

Transformers’ win was remarkable given it was a repeat facing off against TV2’s premiere of Iron Man 3 (5.1% – 7.7%).

After a slow start, and thanks to soft competition on TV2, TV1’s Nigel Latta Blows Stuff Up (5.0% – 8.1%) has built up a head of steam — but not enough to rescue When We Go to War (2.2% – 4.9%).

Sky’s Super Rugby coverage out-rated network fare on Saturday but TV3 had another super night on Friday, when Jono and Ben, Graham Norton and 7 Days successor Live at the Apollo won in all of the key demos.

On Thursday, TV1’s Britain Got Talent seesawed with TV2’s reality shows while the latter’s superhero hours dominated from 8.30-10.30.

But TV2 owned Wednesday from 7.00-9.30, with Shortland Street, MKR, The Big Bang Theory and 2 Broke Girls proving unassailable, except for the comedies losing to TV3’s premiere of Oblivion among household shoppers with kids.

TV1’s The Weirdest Family in America proved alluring enough to win the 9.30 hour in the 18-39, 18-49 and 25-54 demos.

TV2 killed the competition on Tuesday, too, with MKR and the double-episode finale of How to Get Away With Murder.

  1. I don’t ever watch movies on TV at all as I have a collection of just over 2,000 movies, mainly Blu-rays. I did see a couple of minutes of the Transformers movie on TV though and annoyingly and not unusually the movie was screened in the incorrect aspect ratio 1:85:1 instead of 2:35:1. Rationale behind this approach is probably because many people don’t want black bars on their TV.

  2. Surely this indicates a third season of X Factor NZ will be made next year despite NZ on Air no longer funding future seasons. Philip: any word yet on whether TV3 will finally bring the UK version of X Factor, just like TVNZ has managed to bring Britain’s Got Talent to NZ?

  3. Yes, Leo, TV3 does plan to screen X Factor UK. I agree re X Factor NZ: it may cost a lot but the publicity TV3 exacts from it — good and bad — is pure gold. And it still rates incredibly well in the key demos.

  4. Wow, that is awesome news!! Thanks, Philip. I hope they bypass the Australian version this year in favour of the UK version as both screen around the same time. The Australian version could be a summer filler. Fingers crossed X Factor NZ gets the green light.
