TV3 Gives Age Gap Love the Shove

TV3 is dumping Age Gap Love and replacing it with an extra episode of Gallipoli.

The network has yet to reschedule the documentary series about couples who are aged years apart, which airs for the last time on Wednesday.

The cancellation is surprising given the series has held its own against TV2’s Agent Carter and was out-rating TV1’s Hotel of Mum and Dad.

The thinking behind the strategy probably is two-fold: Gallipoli isn’t rating gangbusters, so the network has opted to run it out quicker than planned with double episodes.

Secondly, while the World War I drama deserves better ratings, its audience is constant.

And if TV3 can retain it for a second consecutive hour, it will lift viewership for the 9.30 slot — especially when TV1 is replacing Hotel of Mum and Dad with the potentially stronger Alec Polizzi’s Secret Italy, which should make a strong start off the back of The Day That Changed My Life on Wednesday.

Despite Age Gap Love’s fate here, Channel 5 in the UK has commissioned a second season.
