TVNZ 2 Pulls Young Sheldon for The Resident

TVNZ 2 is dropping Young Sheldon from its Monday night line-up.

The Big Bang Theory spin-off is being pulled mid-season, with next week’s episode being the last to air at 8.30, ahead of the season finale of Will & Grace.

The  network will replace it with the documentary, Sex Bots Are Coming, on April 16 and launch The Resident on April 23. Originally, it was going to pair Young Sheldon with the return of Life in Pieces.

The Resident is a new medical drama that will air 8.30 Mondays and Tuesdays.

It went to air in January on Fox in the US, and stars The Good Wife’s Matt Czuchry as an idealistic young doctor.

It earned middling reviews. They ranged from, “If it doesn’t break any new ground in the genre, it efficiently delivers a familiar mix of ethical conundrums and colourful characters, with just enough blood and sex to seem ‘real’ in TV terms” (Los Angeles Times) to, “It needs a stronger, broader ensemble. When everyone is terrible, it’s hard to care” (Variety).

In the US, The Resident has become a top 20 staple in the 18-49 demographic, which is TVNZ 2’s target demo.

Young Sheldon started strongly for TVNZ 2 but in recent weeks has faltered against Three’s 9-1-1. Ironically, the switch comes as Three moves from drama programming on Mondays to movies.

This show ain’t no The Good Doctor. It’s terrible that The Good Doctor has no NZ broadcaster.

  2. But for Lightbox there would be no The Good Doctor in NZ. Glass half full. Such is the way of the world – if you want something you have to pay for it. Relying on the ad-funded broadcasters for all and sundry has long since past. Besides TVNZ has to save its pennys to spend on the Rugby World Cup for the benefit of all (sic).

  3. Download it. Was forced to download The Gifted due to no single company has it. The Gifted is brilliant, highly worthy of watching.

  4. The Resident and The Gifted are both 20th Century Fox Television Distribution properties – and both marketed at MIPCOM last year. Not sure why TVNZ wouldnt have picked this up for Duke given the loss of the WB superhero franchises. I could only guess that Lightbox or someone will get the streaming rights when The Gifted S2 gets released.

  5. Why are we doing Sex Bots that will not support these other shows on that night?
