TVNZ 2 Races to Catch Up in Weekend Ratings

The Amazing Race Australia may be topping the ratings over the Tasman but here it’s being dropped as TVNZ 2’s Sunday night anchor and replaced with movies as part of sweeping changes to the network’s weekend schedule.

Also on the move, but to new slots still to be disclosed, are the Saturday night sitcoms Young Sheldon and Mom.

Race, meanwhile, will air 7.30 Fridays as of this weekend. Originally, the network was going to make the change from March 26 but has brought it forward presumably because it can’t afford to keep losing viewers on commerically the most important night of the week.

On Fridays, it will air against softer competition whereas on Sundays it has to face off against TVNZ 1’s popular Sunday and Three’s Married at First Sight Australia.

The Friday instalment will push back 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown to 8.30, which will usurp the movie slot (gone from the schedule this week and next are Hancock and Rock of Ages).

TVNZ 2’s also adding a late-night Friday re-run of season one of Wellington Paranormal, which will screen post-midnight after Paranormal Caught on Camera.

Race isn’t the only Sunday night change. TVNZ 2 is replacing The Cube at 6.00 with re-runs of Make You Laugh Out Loud.

The first movie to screen in Race’s vacated slot will be Life of the Party, which has been rescheduled from 8.35 to 7.30. The Sunday night horror, Alien 3, also will now screen earlier, at 9.40.

Rounding out the night will be re-runs of One Born Every Minute Australia and Motorway Patrol: 20 Years Special.

Movies are also being used as a quick-fix for Saturdays post-Young Sheldon and Mom. The Golden Compass, which was due to air this Saturday at 4.50, has been promoted to 6.30, following The Simpsons in its new 6.00 slot.

And next week, TVNZ 2 is replacing the previously scheduled return of Claws (12.30am Wednesday) with kidult spy drama Alex Rider.

  1. I knew that Saturday night sitcoms would rate badly given the low appetite when people would rather watch Internet or movies on TV. Maybe TVNZ 2 should drop the programme and maybe Three buy it next time hopefully to give it a ratings boost.

  2. How about giving Superman and Lois its partnership with Popstars and then TVNZ 2 that edge.
