TVNZ 2 to Fast Track Marvel’s Inhumans

TVNZ 2 will premiere Marvel’s Inhumans within two days of the US.

The latest superheroes series will launch 9.05 on October 1 after the free-to-air premiere of another comic book adaptation, Ant-Man.

Marvel’s Inhumans will go to air on September 29 in the US, where early reviews suggest it could be another ABC bomb (Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter) for TVNZ.

Inhumans is legitimately the worst Marvel adaptation of the year (yes, even beating out Iron Fist),” IndieWire declared.

“In fact, as far as terrible Marvel adaptations go, you might have to go all the way back to Roger Corman’s unreleased 1994 Fantastic Four film to best it.”

OK, nothing in Inhumans looks as bad as that rubber Thing suit — in fact, Marvel reportedly spent some serious money on polishing the effects prior to release, and on screen the money shows. But that can’t make up for deeply flawed storytelling filled with plotholes, poorly thought-out characters, and lacklustre direction.

Inhumans stars Hell on Wheels’ Anson Mount as the head of a royal family of superheroes that’s split asunder by a military coup — as apparently were relations between ABC and Marvel over its commissioning.

ABC sources tell Variety that concerns over quality of Inhumans episodes — both the special effects of early cuts and the underpinning scripts — were a source of contention between ABC and Marvel.

In the US, the double-episode premiere was first seen theatrically last month on the IMAX circuit. Reported Variety:

Marvel, ABC, and IMAX announced the greenlight for Inhumans last November as a joint production that would see IMAX share costs with the Disney division, then premiere the first two episodes exclusively ahead of the show’s fall premiere on ABC. (The episodes air back-to-back Sept. 29 on ABC with several minutes of additional footage not seen in the IMAX feature included.)

Such crossovers between television and theatrical film are rare. When the Game of Thrones season four finale screened in IMAX theaters over Super Bowl weekend in 2015, it drew $1.4 million in the U.S. — a shade less than the Inhumans premiere.

Thanks to the investment from IMAX, Disney divisions Marvel and ABC consider the show effectively paid for, regardless of its performance on broadcast … But the trailers for series and clips screened this summer at Comic-Con have fueled negative early buzz for the series.

I don’t know why TVNZ is bothering with it, it sounds awful 🙂

  2. I’ve set my TiVo up to record it so we’ll see what it’s like.

  3. Dear Trevor: Marvels Inhumans may be good for a lot of people, specially for the people who would enjoy sci-fi, so lets’ see how this will play out before you judge.

  4. Late night obscurity here we come! Ha-ha

  5. Agreed Rosco. Are we taking bets on how long it’ll take to be bumped to graveyard?

  6. This is already moving to Duke after the first week. Pretty stupid decision, really.

  7. Yes, it’s a shame whenever shiny HD shows wind up on SD channels. At least with Duke you can stream the channel in near-HD quality and the show is being expressed-from-the-US on

  8. Worse than Iron Fist? That makes it worth checking out. lol

  9. Is Inhumans a movie or is it a new TV drama series?
