TVNZ+ Detour for Netflix’s Tourist

Season two of The Tourist will stream here on TVNZ+ from January 1 — not Netflix, where it will stream internationally from February 29.

S1 of the BBC thriller starred Jamie Dornan (The Fall, Fifty Shades … ) as an amnesiac with a murky past stranded in the Australian outback; S2 has him returning to Ireland to rediscover his roots, only to wind up in the middle of a dangerous family feud that makes the Hatfields and McCoys look like the Waltons.

Variety reports Netflix has exclusive rights to both seasons of The Tourist for territories outside the UK. But clearly that doesn’t include this market, as TVNZ has confirmed it has exclusivity.

It will stream the six-part series the day of its UK premiere. The original’s Jack and Harry Williams (The Missing, Baptiste) also have penned the sequel.

S1 launched with 11.4 million viewers in the UK and was the UK’s most-watched drama of 2022 across all platforms.

It won three Golden Nymph Awards at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, including Best Series, and international sales spanned five continents.

Netflix also has picked up rights to another linear TV series, Girls5eva, and commissioned a third season of the NBCUniversal/Peacock musical-comedy about a one-hit-wonder girl group from the late ‘90s whose members reunite to give their pop star dreams one more shot.

It launched here to great fanfare on TVNZ 2 but soon was relegated to late-night.

Netflix has the streaming rights to the first two seasons and will premiere S3 on March 14.
