Wimbledon Returns to TVNZ 1

It’s not exactly an ace for TVNZ but today the broadcaster confirmed TVNZ 1 will screen live coverage of the Wimbledon finals.

Earlier, TVNZ back-tracked on original plans to stream just the Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Finals, and the Mixed Doubles, Gentlemen’s Doubles and Ladies’ Doubles on TVNZ+.

It’s now streaming the Wimbledon world feed daily on TVNZ+, along with daily highlights.

This feed follows the main court action, select games from other courts, and quarters and semi-final action of the main draws.

TVNZ revealed its change of heart yesterday on social media and today issued a publicity amendment.

“We’re really pleased to be able to bring viewers this level of coverage for Wimbledon this year,” a spokesperson says.

But she wouldn’t comment on why TVNZ had expanded its coverage at the 11th hour, why it hadn’t licensed rights for the entire tournament in the first place, or the ins and outs of licensing agreements as they relate to splitting digital and linear rights, as “this information is commercially sensitive”.

But she was more forthcoming on why TVNZ+ is the broadcaster’s preferred platform for sport.

“In regards to scheduling more broadly, TVNZ+ is TVNZ’s home for free-to-air sport.

“Our sports streaming hub delivers a viewing experience which our audiences love, whether it’s watching live or catching up on replays and highlights.

“We’re seeing huge engagement with the UEFA EURO 2024 competition on TVNZ+. As of Saturday, the competition had 2.4 million streams in all people aged 13-plus.

“It’s TVNZ’s ambition to be a digital-first media organisation by 2030 – our TVNZ+ Sports product is a strong example of this.”
